Why I Create K-Pop Dance Covers

In 2017, I embarked on a journey to start a K-pop Dance Cover account. I remember I had NO IDEA what I was doing. If you were to look at my first cover, you would probably be embarrassed, and sometimes I still am.

It’s impressive that I kept up with this journey since I often have an idea to do something, but it says just that–an idea. However, dancing to K-pop became my greatest hobby–and fierce love–that I still have five years later.

I’ve had to ask myself why I never abandoned this hobby because even though it’s a fun way to express yourself, it can also be very draining.

For those who don’t know, K-pop is a highly fast-paced industry that’s constantly releasing music, new performances, and new dances. Trying to keep up and learn “the next big dance” is nearly impossible, especially since, for most of us, dancing to K-pop isn’t a full-time job. We have other responsibilities, and it can be hard to get motivated to learn a dance when those are finished.

Other frustrations include gaining an audience and a consistent following that engages with you. It’s very discouraging when you post a cover, and it hardly reaches anyone. But you look at others, and they easily obtain thousands of likes and hundreds of comments for doing the same thing.

Instagram’s algorithm is the absolute worst, and while TikTok has been a refreshing platform to build an account on, it has its ups and downs too. Youtube is a constant battle, and I don’t understand its algorithm or how to gain traction to this day. I post and hope for the best.

But I say all this to say, even with these roadblocks (the pressure to stay relevant, building an audience, trying to reach the masses), I always came back to the pure joy I feel every time I learn and film a dance. Over the years, I have seen tremendous growth in my dance ability and interpretation of detailed choreography. Dances that used to give me so much trouble became easier and dances I would never attempt started to call out to me as I gained more confidence in my ability. Of course, I am far from perfect and will never stop learning more about dance, but the confidence boost I received from dancing to K-pop covers is unmatched.

Even though these dances are copies of someone’s choreography, I have an avenue to be creative, explore performance, challenge myself, and just be free and happy. Sometimes I get tired and need a break, but even then, I fall back into the rhythm of creating covers. And while I’m not what others would consider a big account, I have built a following, I feel that many have enjoyed my dancing, I’ve met some amazing friends and get to have some wonderful experiences, which honestly matters most. Every comment, every share, every like is a sweet reminder that there are people out there who follow and support me, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

I hope and desire to continue to be an even better coversist and inspire others to dance.

So, in a nutshell, here’s why I continue to create K-Pop Dance Covers:

  • I get to dress up!

  • I get to be creative

  • It allows me to connect with others who also love K-pop and dancing

  • I can challenge myself to grow as a dancer

  • It’s a confidence booster

  • I get to listen to the artists I LOVE

  • It’s a skill

  • It helps me discipline myself

  • It helps me learn new things about myself

  • I can inspire others

  • It’s incredibly fun to do so

So expect to see me on your feed! I hope you guys can do the same as well. Enjoy life and do the things that bring you joy.

Until next time!
